Cage the Elephant please fans with high-energy set at Alexandra Palace
Cage the Elephant returns to London on their current UK/EU tour, kickstarting the weekend with high energy, bursts of colour and a memorable light show. The Kentucky rock band celebrated their latest Grammy-winning album, Social Cues, at Alexandra Palace and gave fans an unforgettable performance.
On a blacked-out arena, shrouded in smoke, lights suddenly covered Alexandra Palace, and the crowd erupted as the members of Cage the Elephant were revealed. The band was scattered over two levels, with some level with the audience and others towering over the crowd. However, all attention was grabbed by frontman Matt Shultz, whose chaotic energy had the audience eating out of the palm of his hand.
Opening with Broken Boy and then moving on to old classics such as Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked and Cigarette Daydreams, Cage the Elephant’s newest tour not only promotes their latest album but gives fans their favourites. There was, however, a distinct focus on the band’s newer work, with standout tracks such as Tokyo Smoke and Social Cues, during which all members of the band truly came alive. After an impressive 18-track setlist, the night ended with a four-song encore, much to the pleasure of screaming fans. Cage the Elephant’s UK/EU tour looks like a celebration of their current success and a foreshadowing of future albums and hits.
Shultz’s performance style is something that can only be described as pure showmanship. Not only did he kick, jump and dance, he also added comedy to moments of his set. Playing with the audience continuously, his enjoyment was contagious, and his immense love for music was evident. Paired with the open arena of Alexandra Palace and the vibrant light show which accompanied each song, Shultz had the entire room dancing, jumping and clapping. With constant energy, audience interaction and impressive stamina, the band lived up to its reputation as one of the best live performers.
The show was a constant good time and a memorable night for all the audience. It is evident that this is a tour no Cage the Elephant fan ought to miss.
