OneRepublic play uplifting crowd-pleasers and intimate covers at London Palladium

OneRepublic play uplifting crowd-pleasers and intimate covers at London Palladium | Live review

MySpace was the platform that introduced the world to the then unsigned OneRepublic way back in 2005. Timbaland propelled them into mainstream ears with his version of Apologise, but the band have always drawn a diverse crowd with their eclectic mix of pop-rock that refuses to be confined to one genre.

Exuding effortless charisma, Ryan Tedder commanded the stage with his trademark blend of rock-star swagger and warm and inviting persona. Offering humorous, down-to-earth and sometimes poignant interactions with the audience, Tedder managed to make the packed Palladium feel intimate. Ultimately, though, the music did all the talking.

Melding new material and album tracks with the crowd-pleasers, the carefully considered setlist catered to all. The band delivered fresh takes on well known songs, with Apologise warranting a particularly heartfelt delivery and If I Lose Myself evoking sheer passion. Fan favourite Counting Stars prompted the audience to dance in the aisles. Tedder’s vocals have aged well, his soul-drenched, raspy delivery adding new layers to his already profound lyrics.

The frontman has written a lot of songs for other artists, so it was nice that he showcased this with a medley that included Beyonce’s Halo and the Leona Lewis hit Bleeding Love. A stripped-down violin-led rendition of Ella Henderson’s Ghost was also a notable highlight. When We Were Young and Rescue Me were infused with energy, radiating an infectiously uplifting atmosphere.

Considering it’s been four years since their last album, the band is at the top of their game, offering London an energetic, thoughtful and above all entertaining experience. If this gig is anything to go by, the future is looking incredibly promising for the group. They’re back in London in the autumn, and their fifth album Human drops this spring.
