David Haye defeated rival Dereck Chisora by a fifth round knock-out in one of the most eagerly anticipated heavyweight bouts in recent memory.

In front of a packed Upton Park crowd, the pair went toe-to-toe, and it was Haye who landed the big shots, before a second knock-down in the fifth round was too much for “Del-Boy” Chisora who failed to beat the referee’s ten count.

The bout was marred by controversy, with both fighters banned by the British Boxing Board of Control, but the fight still going ahead after receiving licences from the Luxembourg Boxing Federation.

The pre-fight build-up was a war of the words, with Haye promising to “punish” Chisora in the ring, in their four meetings prior to Saturday nights clash, a steel fence had to separate the pair.

When the talking stopped, it was time for the punches to do the talking, and it was Haye shouting loudest. After edging the opening three-rounds, Haye was caught with a shot after the bell at the end of the fourth and from that moment, the sluggish Chisora didn’t stand a chance.

A big left-right combination from Haye sent Chisora to the canvas and, after climbing back to his fight, he received five more punishing blows from Haye to send him back down. Chisora bravely battled to return to his feet but referee Luis Pabon decided enough was enough and called an end to the brawl.

The most surprising event of the evening, was the hugs and handshakes shared by Haye and Chisora after the bout, with Haye declaring a “new found respect” for his opponent. What was meant to be the darkest hour for British heavyweight boxing turned out rather well.
