The Silent Twins: On the red carpet with Letitia Wright, Tamara Wallace and Agnieszka Smoczynska

The Silent Twins: On the red carpet with Letitia Wright, Tamara Wallace and Agnieszka Smoczynska

Channelling a true story and book adaptation from Marjorie Wallace, The Silent Twins is a heart-wrenching portrayal of two twin girls, called Jennifer and June Gibbons, who fell silent as a result of racist bullying and ostracisation at a young age. The pair then retreated and only looked inward toward one another. They developed their own unique language and mirrored each other, whilst creating their own imaginative world and writing in personal diaries as a way of speaking out.

The film details their lives as they became withdrawn, treasured romance and turned to criminal activity, landing the unusual pair in a psychiatric unit at Broadmoor Hospital. The story explores the many layers that peel away their lives before the untimely death of Jennifer, leading to the unexpected emancipation of her twin sister June.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to the cast and creatives about the film on the red carpet at Ham Yard hotel. Letitia Wright and Tamara Wallace chatted about their roles as Jennifer and June, and how they explored the dynamics of being a twin in this feature.

Director Agnieszka Smoczyńska revealed what drew her to tell this story, how she went about the casting process for the twins and the way in which she set the tone of the film to make it as authentic as it could be.

We also spoke to costume designer and producers Cobbie Yates and Saskia Duff about the story itself, the emotive elements of bringing this to screen and what viewers can expect when watching it.
