“You’ve got to laugh at the chaos”: Harriet Dyer and Patrick Brammall on Colin from Accounts

Colin from Accounts is the hilarious new Australian sitcom created by and starring real-life couple Harriet Dyer and Patrick Brammall. At the outset, we are in the realm of the relatable yet off-beat humour, with a meet-cute involving a boob flash and an injured dog, from where the quirky chemistry between Ashley and Gordon, two wonderfully flawed yet joyously likeable characters, ensues.

The Upcoming had the chance to chat with their pair about the wild success of the show, which is now showing in the UK on the BBC. They shared the creative journey behind Colin from Accounts, and the sensibilities that it shares in different ways with the likes of Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney’s smash-hit Catastrophe, Sally Rooney’s Normal People adaptation and Ricky Gervais’s The Office. We discussed how they navigate dual roles as writers and actors, all while juggling the joys and challenges of their off-screen marital life, with parallels to other couples who’ve worked together, from Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise in Eyes Wide Shut to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in Mr and Mrs Jones, not always with a happy ending. Finally, they also shared their reflections on how comedy can easily travel from Australia to the UK, with deadpan humour capturing the often excruciating embarrassment and awkwardness that can happen on the road the romance.

Colin from Accounts is released on BBC iPlayer on 11th April 2023.
