British actor Asa Butterfield, known for his role in the Netflix series Sex Education, will make his stage debut in the new play Second Best. The comedy-drama, written by Barney Norris and directed by Michael Longhurst, will open at Riverside Studios in London on 24th January 2025, and run for a limited period until 22nd February 2025.

Second Best tells the story of Martin Hill, a man who nearly became a child star when he was one of the last two candidates considered for the role of Harry Potter. Now an adult and on the verge of fatherhood, Martin reflects on his life and the pivotal moments that have led him to where he is now. The play explores themes of fate, missed opportunities and the paths life takes, blending humour with poignancy in a narrative about life’s near misses.

Butterfield expressed his enthusiasm for his first theatrical role, stating, “It’s equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, a universal tale of ‘what ifs’, and I can’t wait to bring it to life on stage for the very first time.” The play is based on David Foenkinos’ best-selling novel, which has been adapted for the stage by Norris.

Producer Simon Friend highlighted the novel’s impact and its suitability for a stage adaptation: “I read David Foenkinos’s wonderful novel when it was published last year, and it immediately cried out to be told on stage. It’s a coming-of-age story of success and failure, love and loss, and fathers and sons – as well as the universal experience of plans going awry.”

The production is brought to life under the direction of Michael Longhurst, an acclaimed stage director known for his work at The Donmar Warehouse and other notable productions. The set and costume design for Second Best are handled by Fly Davis, and the play is produced by Simon Friend Entertainment.

Butterfield’s transition from screen to stage marks a significant moment in his career, which has already seen a diverse range of roles across film and television. From his early roles in films like The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Hugo to his recent work in Sex Education, Butterfield has demonstrated a wide acting range. His upcoming projects include starring in the Netflix psychological thriller Out of the Dust, alongside Molly Windsor and Christopher Eccleston.

Tickets for Second Best are available now, with performances scheduled from 24th January 24 to 22nd February 2025, at Riverside Studios, offering audiences a unique theatrical experience led by one of Britain’s rising stars.
