Instead of welcoming his fiancée in Rangoon as planned, wedding day jitters see British imperial servant Edward depart on a transnational journey across Asia. His betrothed, Molly, is rather amused at these turn of events and in an equally spontaneous manner, decides to follow his trail.

As adventurous a director as the characters portrayed in his film, Miguel Gomes freely experiments with structure and style in order to bring this offbeat love story to life. Shortly before he was awarded the prize for Best Director at the 77th Cannes film festival, we spoke to the Portuguese filmmaker about the unconventional pitch for this project, his own journey across the countries his characters traverse and the significance of narrative elements such as the voiceover and use of puppetry.
