The Jury Experience at The Shaw Theatre

The thrill of the courtroom, that inquisitive spirit within us that is stirred when a drama unfolds, is now available to be shared and experienced through The Jury Experience. This Fever Original production first launched last year in selected cities, mostly in the United States, before making its way to this side of the pond. To mark World Theatre Day, a couple of different cases alternate on selected dates, offering audiences the chance to take part in the administration of justice as jurors. Taking place at The Shaw Theatre, near King’s Cross, the show has undergone some tweaks to adapt to British soil, from wigs for the lawyers and judges to references to the NHS and MPs.

The Jury Experience: Death on the Port Side, the case examined on opening night, lays out the circumstantial evidence surrounding the death of a young woman at the hands of a man from high society. Was the crash of the family speedboat part of an intentional murder? Or was it a tragic incident whose outcome no one could really have foreseen?

The one-hour show moves through the stages of a courtroom case: opening speeches, witnesses called to the stand, material presented before the judge, closing arguments, and finally the verdict. Theatregoers are invited to express their choices in order to move the proceedings forward via a simple poll accessible through a QR code. This interactive element which determines the direction of the next scenes, shapes the final verdict differently from one performance to the next. That is because the jurors – the audience – are asked to cast their vote on various points, from the impact of the opening speeches to whether to admit one piece of evidence or another. This call to action somewhat muddles the process, as in real life, testimonies and proofs are not decided at the jurors’ discretion. Moreover, the many pauses and repeated questioning considerably slow the proceedings – somewhat jarring for a proper thespian performance, and planting the suspicion that there is rather little substance to the plot and structure, all things considered. However, this continuous mechanism of consulting the public highlights how emotional charge, and the subjective way in which we filter facts and statements, can have a real impact on the course of justice – and how complete objectivity is very difficult, if not impossible, to attain.

The cast delivers intensely eloquent performances worthy of some of the most popular American TV dramas. The cases examined bring together a range of controversial standpoints that effectively engage and entertain the audience. For those less familiar or who have not paused to reflect on the impact and detours of opinions and emotions, the production renders these dynamics more tangible.
