Karol G – No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto

William Wordsworth wrote in 1800 that “all good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings”. Consider Karol G’s new album with this sentiment in mind – No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto translates to “I don’t regret feeling so much”. If thoughts “are indeed the representatives of all our past feelings”, as Wordsworth suggested, then Karol’s 14-track album aims to help listeners recognise themselves in the complexity of feeling too much. She tells a deeply personal narrative of loss, love, life and letting go (or not). The root of this record is pain, with a particular focus on the aftermath of the end of a romantic relationship.

First track, Te Llevas To, is reflective, melancholy and full of bitterness. The listening journey of the album begins with a wild, raw anger. Bebiendo Lágrimas is elegiac initially – a goodbye to the relationship and the past. It starts gently, with Karol’s voice a lament. The shift into a stronger beat evokes the dance floor, rather than a song to cry to. As there are consistent references to going out and trying to enjoy life, this association is not incongruous.

Whilst enjoyable, her features Still and Ahí are not as powerful as her solo numbers. As her first song totally in English, Still is a remarkable change in her musical direction. Ahí has Karol and Drake in a duet, where he also sings in Spanish. Her verses depict someone confused and torn, not willing to engage in a new romantic relationship whilst healing. His verses promise to wait – a suggestion of hope.

Final Feliz, or “Happy Ending”, is arguably the best on the album. It depicts the desire to return to happiness in the relationship, introspective and truly melancholic. Eclipse uses the moon as a conceit, seeing her beg Luna for clarity as she tries to move on.

Si Lo Ven articulates the difficulties of healing and reflects the true reality of processing emotional trauma. BbY WOW is thematically similar, lyrically conveying shock at the apparent impossibility of moving on.

Each song could serve as a standalone single and represent the album – in this sense, her goal of a single purpose was successful. Where many break-up records tell their stories in a linear narrative – pain, process, healed – Karol G alternates between acknowledgement and suffering. Regardless of how listeners interact with No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto, Karol’s assertion that she “does not regret feeling so much” holds up throughout.
