Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles lead a new Sense and Sensibility for the big screen

Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility is returning to the big screen this month, with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles taking on Elinor and Marianne Dashwood in a new adaptation of the classic novel.

Edgar-Jones, best known for Normal People and Twisters, stars as Elinor, while Hanna actor Creed-Miles – daughter of actors Samantha Morton and Charlie Creed-Miles – plays her younger sister Marianne. The pair lead an ensemble that also includes Caitríona Balfe, George MacKay, Frank Dillane, Fiona Shaw, Herbert Nordrum and Bodhi Rae Breathnach.

At the centre of the story are the two sisters, whose very different approaches to love and emotion are tested by family upheaval and the expectations placed on them.

The film is directed by Blue Jean filmmaker Georgia Oakley and written by novelist Diana Reid. It comes from Focus Features and Working Title, the company behind the acclaimed 1995 adaptation starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.

A newly released trailer gives audiences a first extended look at this latest interpretation of Austen’s world, with the bond between Elinor and Marianne sitting alongside the romantic entanglements and social pressures that shape their lives.

Originally published in 1811, Sense and Sensibility has been adapted numerous times for film and television, but its contrast between restraint and emotional openness has kept the Dashwood sisters among Austen’s most enduring characters.

With a new cast and a contemporary creative team behind it, this latest version brings one of Austen’s best-known stories back to cinemas for a new generation.
