Matt Cardle live at Scala
The 2010 X Factor winner Matt Cardle performed a tight and musically sound set in North London’s Scala last night. Those who are cynical – and for good reasons – about X Factor winners’ longevity might have been shocked to see the huge queue going down the street outside the venue an hour before he was due to come on stage. It seems that this charming Essex chap’s love songs and rugged appearance have gained him a loyal fan-base, even if it does consist of mostly women.
, allowing the crowd to sing with him and get involved. During another track from the anticipated album, Empire, Cardle gave a quick introduction about how the song was about a “fictional character yet to materialise”, talking about how the love of his life is yet to come into his life, thrilling a considerable portion of the crowd. This song had him pouring out his heart and soul, putting down his guitar and really making energetic showmanship a key element of the concert: one that made him so loveable back in his X Factor days.
With songs from his successful debut making up a sizeable chunk of his show, young fans enthusiastically sung along with him – it seems that Cardle’s talent is just that: producing songs that are recognisable, memorable and simply structured enough for crowds, young and old, to join in with. As if he was leading a gospel choir, Cardle gestured for the crowd to take part constantly, demonstrating his knack for leading and spreading infectious pop hooks.
Matt Cardle even included a cover of a Biffy Clyro song – showing his interest in hardcore music that may influence some of his sound. Having female underwear thrown at him did sum up the majority of people who made it to the show. However, Cardle demonstrated last night that he is a versatile musician, switching from more soft acoustic songs to blaring soul-influenced numbers, constantly showing off his love and obvious gift for live musicianship.
