Cutler & Gross: Luxury bespoke eyewear

Luxury eyewear brand Cutler & Gross, founded in 1969 in London, have helped eyewear transform into a fashion-forward, must-have accessory.  Although this brand may have started off as a small-time Knightsbridge opticians offering cool and understated custom-made frames, in 1982 during Paris Fashion Week, a whole new avant-garde design style came through, making eyewear more trendy than ever.

Cutler & Gross have several boutiques in the Knightsbridge, Kensington and Chelsea boroughs in London, as well as Hong Kong and Toronto, and a show-room in the Middle East. According to Time Out magazine, its vintage shop is in the top 100 best shops in London.

Cutler & Gross have had fantastic opportunities to collaborate with the likes of Alberta Ferretti, Mulberry, Erdem, Giles Deacon and even our beloved Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham, to create a variation of styles over the years such as rock ‘n’ roll 80s frames, or enlarged retro cat-eye frames using pop colours or neutral tones. Cutler & Gross continue to do two collaborations a year.

In 2011, Cutler & Gross turned the top floor of its Knightsbridge store into a museum where you can view multiple frames dating back to the late 60s. What really makes this store unique, however, is the mirror room – also created at this time – which allows customers to create their own style of frame and still receive this personalised service Cutler & Gross are known for. In the same year, it also launched its first bi-annual magazine.

Cutler & Gross has been a major part of the transformation between making accessories just as important as clothing. Style this chic does come with a large price tag (ranging from £200 to a hefty £3,000), but when you are given the opportunity to create something unique, personal and fashion-forward all in one, it might just be worth it!
