Sew Lomax: making ethical funky

Sew Lomax: making ethical funky

Shoppers and canvas bags are all over the shops – however, they tend to be mass-produced and not necessarily in an ethical way. When you buy a Sew Lomax bag that isn’t the case.

Sew Lomax is the label created by Emma Lomax; her imagination is a big part of who she is and she loves to create things. She gets excited when she sees the right fabric or catches sight of rows and rows of beautiful silks, wools and cotton. Even a discarded bobbin or button fills her with glee in anticipation of what can be created from the cast-off items.

Emma’s mother is an incredibly creative person and an embroidery teacher. When Emma and her siblings were younger they were constantly sticking, painting, striping, stitching and embroidering and Emma states on her website: “I was delighted to see a shift away from mass produced items and the return in popularity of craft and everything ‘home made’” .

In 2011 Emma launched Sew Lomax where she could mix her passion, experience and skill to create attractive and wittily stitched ethical bags, which have been made by her in the UK.

Each canvas bag is ethically sourced and is treated with Scotchgard™  to protect from stains and it means you can also wipe clean your bag.

The bags are fun and stylish and offer unique and creative ways to organise your day. For example, Emma has created a makeup bag and a wash bag that has cute images on so that you can keep your items separate. Each piece in the range is lovingly finished by hand which enables the owner to feel that they own something individual and unique.

It doesn’t end at wash bags though. Whether you’re looking for a funky laundry bag, a gym bag that will stand out from the crowd or a simple tote with a funky design on, these bags are unique but they also make you feel like you own a product that is truly green.

Emma finds it hard to pin point what truly inspires her. However, she does cite her family and friends as a variable: “Other people’s designs and ideas generally inspire me; people are constantly coming up to me saying I should make a bag this way or what way. I am sometimes not sure if my designs are my own or a collection of lots of my friends and family”.
