We may have barely passed midsummer, but the fashion pack are already wearing the new autumn looks. Here’s how to stand out from the crowd in next season’s coolest trends.

Khaki green: If summer has been all about bold and bright shades, autumn will see a shift towards the muted end of the colour palette. Think shabby greens, inspired by the vintage jackets that characterise army surplus stores. You needn’t go trawling fleamarkets to find something suitable though – Next has a parka coat in green that’s the perfect nod to autumn’s army-inspired look.

Quilted jackets: Not a fan of the parka? Don’t worry – there’s another jacket that’s set to be big again for next season. That’s right, the much maligned quilted jacket is making a comeback. An extension of the trend for padded jackets started by ‘country chic’, the puffer has a serious advantages over other fashion jackets in that it will actually keep you warm and toasty. A must for your wardrobe as we move into winter.

Floral: If you invested in a selection of floral outfits for your summer wardrobe, then don’t throw them out just yet. The floral trend will continue into autumn, although the colours won’t be quite as bright.

Roll necks: Perfect for snuggling up in front of a bonfire, the roll neck jumper is another fashion classic that will be staging a comeback this autumn. Go for chunky knits, or layer under a shirt – you’ll find some great inspiration on the runway at Pringle.

Leather trousers: We’ve had the neon jean and the wet-look leggings – but in autumn it’s the leather trousers that will be leading the fashion pack when it comes to legwear. Take the colour down a notch from summer brights, but you can still opt for stand-out shades such as dusty lilac and mustard.

Lavender hues: Talking about lilac, this subtle but attractive shade is set to be big for autumn. It’s the natural evolution of summer’s pastels and looks great on everything from tops and jeans to bags, shoes and other accessories. You’ll certainly be seeing plenty of ladies in this shade around this autumn time.
