The Tricks at Hysteria

The Tricks at Hysteria | Live review

The inconspicuous club that is Hysteria on Kingsland Road in the vibrant area of Dalston allowed The Tricks to be on great form and proved that they are a confident, up-and-coming band with a lot to offer in the future. The dim, candle-lit venue, with slightly creepy red lighting near the stage set the tone for a low-key, quick but elegant performance from the band scouted by Johnny Depp himself and signed to Unison Music Group. A small, interactive venue was perfect for this band who were clearly natural crowd pleasers – throwing T-shirts into the crowd and speaking with modesty, making sure everyone was a part of the scene.

With a DJ opening with country music to hip-hop, the crowd seemed pretty relaxed until The Tricks had the crowd eagerly following the “Dancing is compulsory” statement printed on the promotional poster.

The Tricks’ forte is their simplicity and ease. Songs like Just For The Summer and Remember Me were recognisable to most of the crowd and feature jumpy, lively riffs and sing along choruses. The lead singer Joel Hodge sung with remarkable ease and clarity. You would never had been fooled into thinking that they are a fresh band; even their appearance – the rugged, black, bohemian dress sense –radiates confidence.

They even provided a slightly aggressive but accurate cover of Santigold’s Disparate Youth, a real treat for the audience: a familiar song by one of the most exciting artists of the moment performed in a gritty stripped down fashion. They closed with their latest single, Part Time Lover, a bittersweet song with a simple structure but ever so catchy chorus that we can all relate to.
