London bakery debuts heart-shaped Filipino-inspired croissants for Valentine’s Day

Café Mama & Sons, the Kentish Town bakery known for its Filipino-inspired pastries, is launching two limited-edition heart-shaped croissants for Valentine’s Day. The special pastries will be available at the café for the lovey-dovey weekend only, offering customers a romantic treat. The initiative aims to provide a playful twist on traditional Valentine’s fare, incorporating both sweet and savoury flavours.

The two croissant varieties are the Ube Heart Croissant and the Cheese Heart Croissant. The first, priced at £7, is described as “a laminated croissant baked into a heart shape, filled with silky ube cream and finished with a tempered ube white chocolate drip”. Ube, a purple yam commonly used in Filipino desserts, gives the pastry its distinctive colour and flavour. The savoury option, which costs £6, is “a classic croissant reworked into a heart, filled with a lightly sweetened cream cheese, a layer of calamansi ketchup for brightness, and finished with cheese for a savoury-sweet contrast”. Calamansi, a citrus fruit native to the Philippines, adds a tangy note.

Mama & Sons has previously gained attention for its innovative takes on classic pastries, combining traditional Filipino ingredients with contemporary baking techniques, and often featuring vibrant colours and unique flavour combinations. The Valentine’s Day offerings reflect their experimental approach, with the heart-shaped croissants intended to appeal to both couples celebrating the holiday and individuals looking to treat themselves.

The special croissants are available on 13th to 15th February only for a “signature blend of Filipino flavours, bold colour and playful pastry, designed to be shared, gifted, or very happily eaten solo”.
