A series of nationwide in-store tastings will introduce Mortadella Bologna PGI to British consumers this February, as part of a campaign organised by The EU Fab 6, who exhort Brits to “savour the PDO and PGI wines and deli meats from Europe”. The initiative, co-financed by the European Union, will take place on 6th and 19th February across 29 Costco locations in England, Scotland and Wales, aiming to raise awareness of the European Union’s Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) quality scheme and encourage engagement with European deli meats.

There will be free tastings of the traditional Italian cold cut at Costcos in cities including Aberdeen, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and London, among others. Trained staff will be on hand at each store to provide information about the product’s origin, production standards and certification, with the goal is of helping shoppers “better understand what makes PGI products unique”.

Mortadella Bologna PGI is produced according to strict specifications, using selected pork meat and natural flavourings, and is recognised for its smooth texture, delicate aroma and balanced flavour. The product is a staple of European charcuterie and is often consumed on its own, in sandwiches, or as part of platters and recipes.

The EU Fab 6 campaign is supported by six European consortia, including Consorzio Italiano Tutela Mortadella Bologna (Italy), Consorzio Cacciatore Italiano (Italy), Consorzio Zampone e Cotechino Modena PGI (Italy), ODG des Premières Côtes de Bordeaux et Cadillac (France), Asociación para la Promoción del vino de Garnacha – Garnacha Origen (Spain) and Consorzio Tutela Vini d’Abruzzo (Italy). Its broader aim is to promote the visibility and appreciation of products marked with the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and PGI labels in the UK and Switzerland.

They explain tastings are designed to “build awareness, stimulate trial and reinforce trust in European quality schemes at the point of purchase”, with the events forming part of a wider strategy to support “informed, quality-driven food choices” among UK consumers.
