Chicken | Movie review

Fresh British talent abounds in this simple yet highly impactful drama. When initially screened at last year’s Edinburgh Film Festival, Chicken was director Joe Stephenson’s debut feature film and it is now being released to wider audiences across the country. Young actor Scott Chambers delivers a raw and impressive performance, one that will hopefully be the foundation of a rewarding acting career. The success of this film relies heavily on his portrayal of the central character, which reels the viewer in from the moment the narrative begins.

The award-winning Chicken follows the story of 15-year-old Richard (Scott Chambers), who has severe learning difficulties, and his unlikely friendship with 17-year-old Annabel (Yasmin Paige). Richard lives in a rickety caravan with his destructive brother, Polly, on Annabel’s parents’ land. As Polly’s behaviour becomes increasingly abusive, the teenagers’ newfound companionship ultimately saves the sweet and innocent Richard as his life changes forever.

The poignant and intense conclusion leaves viewers content but also wanting to know more about the warm and multi-layered characters. The lovable Richard, charming Annabel and complex Polly all entice observers into this somewhat short yet significant film that delves into a tiny part of rural English society. The well-chosen East Anglian setting gives the sense of isolation that enables audiences to conjure deeper connections with the characters and a better understanding of their stories.

As the plot twists and turns, viewers are taken on an emotional journey with the three main characters. Funny, heart-wrenching, sad, surprising and endearing – this film has it all. What makes Chicken truly triumphant and a pleasure to watch is its immersive quality and its ability to establish connections with the characters on screen. The main trio is captivating, each character with an interesting story to tell. This, along with a distinguished script and marvellous performances from emerging actors, makes Chicken an exceptionally fulfilling watch.
