The Angry Birds Movie 2

The Angry Birds Movie 2 | Movie review

The second instalment of The Angry Birds Movie franchise, based on the popular game app of the same name, delivers a colourful and zany adventure with occasional humour. While the film’s jokes don’t always land, it offers a couple of bursts of big laughter for both children and their parents.

The movie opens on Red (Jason Sudeikis) enjoying his meteoric rise to fame after saving Bird Island from Pig Island. Soon enough, both the birds and the pigs return to their rivalry of incessant pranking that wreaks havoc in both locations. But before anything escalates any further, both places face the threat of destruction by giant balls of ice launched at them from the nearby Eagle Island. Red and his friends Chuck (Josh Gad), Bomb (Danny McBride), Leonard (Bill Hader), Silver (Rachel Bloom) and Courtney (Awkwafina) embark on an adventure to stop the mysteriously evil Zeta (Leslie Jones), who dreams of creating her own island paradise in place of the Bird and Pig Islands.

While the feature presents technicolour slapstick that reflects the addictive qualities of the Angry Birds game, it frantically fails to provide any thoughtful lessons for its young audience. The eccentric villain lacks motive and takes a forgettable position alongside other meagerly developed characters. More so, the film attempts to teach a lesson about women empowerment but misses the point entirely by sidelining most of its female characters. Regardless of the picture’s flaws, Jones’s voice acting takes centre stage alongside an equally fun performance from Gad and Bloom. Overall, The Angry Birds Movie 2 contributes an emotionally canned, vibrant distraction.

In the last year, a variety of great animated flicks have entertained both children and adults alike, offering fresh perspectives on contemporary issues with inventive animation styles. By comparison, this movie enters the tradition of aimless sequels to underwhelming films.
