“As much as we loved the original Fletch, we agreed John wasn’t going to try to do a Chevy Chase impersonation”: Greg Mottola, Lorenza Izzo and Annie Mumolo on Confess, Fletch

“As much as we loved the original Fletch, we agreed John wasn’t going to try to do a Chevy Chase impersonation”: Greg Mottola, Lorenza Izzo and Annie Mumolo on Confess, Fletch

Confess, Fletch revives the 1980s Chevy Chase vehicle which quickly evolved into a classic of cult cinema. After many unsuccessful attempts at this revivification over the decades since, Greg Mottola of Superbad and Paul repute gets his hands on this unobtrusively modern update of the much-loved franchise, with Jon Hamm taking over the reins as the titular investigative journalist, Fletch. It is a tightly wound mystery, imbued with the wit and lightness of touch of the original Fletch, while encouraging it gently into the 21st century.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to cast members Lorenza Izzo and Annie Mumolo about their experience making the film, as well as the film’s director.

Izzo, whose character Angela de Grassi is the love interest of Hamm’s nonchalantly charismatic Fletch, spoke to us about the lightness of the film’s comedic tone, as well the luminous experience of working on the film in the city of Rome.

Annie Mumolo’s Eve shares one of the film’s most intricately constructed comedic set-pieces with Hamm’s Fletch. We spoke to the comedic actress about how the scene was executed, as well as her on-screen comedic chemistry with Hamm.

Finally, Mottola imparted insight into the project’s early stages, how it came into being after so many attempts at breathing new life into the cult classic franchise, and his assessment of the chances of seeing more of Hamm’s Fletch in the future.
