“You’re not dealing with one thing, you’re dealing with lots of things”: Gino Evans on Treading Water at London Film Festival 2024

Gino Evans’ debut feature, Treading Water, delivers an unflinching portrayal of urban life in Britain, far removed from the glossy depictions of city living often seen on screen. Set in Manchester, the story follows Danny (Joe Gill), a recently released prisoner battling addiction while living in a shared housing unit with hostile cohabitants. His path crosses with Laura (Becky Bowe), a pregnant sex worker trapped in an abusive relationship. Together, they navigate a world of personal and systemic despair.

In its 121-minute runtime, the film explores the harsh realities of addiction, mental health, abusive relationships and the housing crisis. Evans presents a raw, unromanticised view of life on the margins, in contrast to the glamour often associated with urban living. Treading Water stands as a poignant reflection on northern life, offering a powerful, honest depiction of struggle and survival in a world largely ignored by mainstream cinema.

In an interview with The Upcoming, Evans reflects on the inspiration behind Treading Water, the challenges he encountered during its creation and how the young actors he cast played a pivotal role in shaping the film’s direction.
