Big Mamma to bring new Italian osteria Edmondo to the City of London

Restaurant group Big Mamma will open its newest London site, Edmondo, on 6th November in the City of London, bringing a 200-cover Italian osteria to a Grade II-listed building in the heart of the capital’s financial district near Bank.

The new venue takes its design cues from 1930s Milan, in particular Piero Portaluppi’s Villa Necchi Campiglio, combining Art Deco lines with Italian detailing across the historic interior. A central bar sits at the heart of the room, intended for drinks before or after a meal, while an open kitchen counter allows diners to watch chefs at work.

Edmondo will be the first Big Mamma restaurant to include fully private dining rooms. Three separate spaces will seat between ten and 24 guests: La Libreria is flanked by lit columns imported from Italy and decorated with Enzo Ferrari memorabilia, including original drawings and a vintage racing suit worn by former driver Nigel ‘il leone’ Mansell; Il Salotto is a heritage-listed room panelled in historic English timber; and Il Ridotto is the smallest of the three, designed for more intimate gatherings.

The group explains the new restaurant is “an ode to pure tradizione and exceptional British and Italian produce”, where “uncompromising quality and soulful simplicity reign supreme”. The menu is their most classically Italian to date, albeit with the company’s typical variations. It has been created by head chef Alfonso Esposito, who sources Italian produce from regions ranging from the Alpine valleys to the south of the country, alongside British ingredients including Cornish crab and turbot. Dishes will include an XL Focaccia and Gnocchi al Gorgonzola from Lombardy. The restaurant will also carry Big Mamma’s largest selection of native breed steaks from Cornish butcher Philip Warren, grilled with a signature spice crust, with cuts running the gamut from T-bone to tagliata.

Pastry chef Angelina has designed the dessert menu, which features an Italian chocolate cake that melts in the middle and a version of the classic affogato. The drinks list has been created by bar manager Ilaria and includes house barrel-aged Boulevardiers.

The opening adds to Big Mamma’s growing London estate, which includes eateries in Shoreditch, Soho, Covent Garden and Battersea. The City area has seen a steady increase in restaurant openings, offering both after-work dining, quick lunches and hearty fare for weekend visitors. This one brings something special – as the team puts it, “the Square Mile meets pure bella vita”.
