Lollipop set for UK and Ireland cinema release, exploring the struggles of a young mother against social services barriers

MetFilm Distribution has confirmed the UK and Ireland cinema release of Lollipop, the first scripted feature film by Daisy-May Hudson, set to hit screens on 13th June. The film, starring Posy Sterling, Idil Ahmed and Terriann Cousins, explores the challenging life of a young mother grappling with the bureaucracy of social services after her release from prison.

Lollipop tells the poignant tale of Molly, portrayed by Sterling, who upon her release from a four-month prison term, anticipates quickly reuniting with her children from foster care. However, she faces an unexpected predicament: she cannot secure housing without having her children with her, yet she cannot regain custody of her children without providing a stable living environment. This catch-22 drives the narrative, highlighting the systemic barriers faced by individuals in similar real-life situations.

In her struggle, Molly reconnects with Amina, a childhood friend and fellow single mother played by Ahmed. Together, they confront their challenges, depicting a story of resilience and the pursuit of joy amidst life’s toughest moments. The movie is described as both moving and uplifting, aiming to showcase the strength required to fight for one’s family against all odds.

Set in East London, Lollipop has received support from BBC Film and the BFI, with funding from the National Lottery. This project marks Hudson’s transition from documentary filmmaking to narrative features, following her BAFTA-Breakthrough recognition for the documentary Half Way, which chronicled her own family’s struggle with homelessness.

The authenticity of Lollipop is enriched by Hudson’s personal experiences and a compelling performance by newcomer Sterling. The film’s casting was managed by BAFTA-winner Lucy Pardee, known for her work on critically acclaimed films such as Aftersun and American Honey.

Produced by Olivier Kaempfer and Cecilia Frugiuele of Parkville Pictures, Lollipop premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2024, where it was well-received by critics. This release not only marks a significant step in Hudson’s filmmaking career but also highlights contemporary social issues through the lens of cinema.

As the release date approaches, Lollipop is expected to resonate with audiences through its exploration of maternal bonds, societal challenges and the indomitable human spirit. The film’s nationwide release promises to bring significant attention to the hardships and triumphs of those on the fringes of society, portrayed through a narrative that seeks to inspire and provoke thought.
