Neapolitan-style pizza chain Pizza Pilgrims is collaborating with several well-known British restaurant brands this April to launch a limited-edition crust dipping menu across its UK outlets. The special menu, dubbed The Great British Crust Comeback, will feature specially created dipping sauces developed in partnership with Dishoom, Honest Burgers, Pho and Sweet Dee’s Jerk. The campaign aims to address the widespread habit of leaving pizza crusts uneaten, while also supporting World Wish Month, a global fundraising effort for critically ill children and their families.

The launch comes in response to research indicating that a significant proportion of British diners are reluctant to eat their crusts unless they’re accompanied by a suitable dip. According to data referenced by Pizza Pilgrims, one in four people (25%) won’t eat the rest of a pizza without a dip, and three-quarters (75%) would be more likely to finish if they had an appealing sauce to help. The company estimates that as much as 47 tonnes of pizza crusts – equivalent to the weight of four London buses – are discarded each year in the UK.

In an effort to reduce the waste, the restaurant chain is introducing four new dipping sauces, each inspired by the distinctive flavours of its partner brands. The menu will include the Dishoom Chilli Chutney Dip, Honest Burgers Rosemary Chips Dip, Pho Peanut Sauce and Sweet Dee’s Jerk BBQ. These sauces are designed to encourage customers to finish their cornicione, rather than leaving them on the plate.

The campaign is also linked to World Wish Month, an international initiative that raises funds to grant wishes for children living with serious illness. For every dipper sold throughout April, Pizza Pilgrims will double its donations and the number of dreams that come true. In a statement, the company said they intend to “tackle the nation’s ‘crust issues’ head-on”.

The limited-edition dipping sauces will be available at locations nationwide throughout April.
