Apple TV+ renews acclaimed comedy Trying for fifth season, with new family challenges ahead

Apple TV+ has announced that its original comedy series Trying will return for a fifth season. The show, which stars BAFTA Award nominee Esther Smith and Screen Actors Guild Award nominee Rafe Spall, is produced in the United Kingdom by BBC Studios. The forthcoming season will continue to explore the lives of central characters Nikki (Smith) and Jason (Spall) as they navigate family challenges, with new episodes currently in development.

The series, created and written by Andy Wolton, has steadily built a global following since its debut in 2020. Set in London, Trying follows the story of a couple contending with the trials of adoption and family life. According to details provided by Apple TV+, the new season will focus on the aftermath of Princess and Tyler’s biological mother, Kat (Charlotte Riley), unexpectedly re-entering their lives – a storyline expected to introduce upheaval into the family’s previously settled existence.

Since premiering on Apple TV+, the show has consistently received positive critical and audience reception, maintaining a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It features an ensemble cast that includes BAFTA Award winner Darren Boyd as Scott, Sian Brooke as Karen, Scarlett Rayner as Princess and Cooper Turner as Tyler.

Executive production credits are attributed to Andy Wolton, alongside BAFTA Award nominees Josh Cole and Sam Pinell, as well as Chris Sussman. Productions continue under the auspices of BBC Studios, with all previous four seasons now available to stream through the Apple TV+ platform.

The series has been described in critical reviews as “feel-good,” “poignant,” and praised for its attention to detail and standout performances.

Spall, who plays one of the lead roles, will also appear in another new Apple TV+ drama, Smoke. Further details on the fifth season’s premiere date and episode count are expected later in the year. Watch this space!
