Gunthorpe’s The Anchor and Tom Browns reopen after full revamp

Two Nottinghamshire hospitality venues, The Anchor and Tom Browns, reopened to the public earlier this month, following a £2 million refurbishment by the Reddington Pub Company. Both establishments, located in Gunthorpe along the River Trent, have been fully booked for their launch. The investment has created up to 100 new jobs locally, as Reddington Pub Company aims to rejuvenate the area’s dining and entertainment scene.

The Anchor, a family-friendly pub, and Tom Browns, an adults-only restaurant, have both been longstanding fixtures in Gunthorpe, with a combined history of over a century. The Anchor, which had been closed for 16 years, has undergone significant renovation to offer a modern yet cosy atmosphere. The venue now features a pub, café, and courtyard, and has introduced four en-suite guest rooms for overnight stays. The menu, developed by Michelin Bib Gourmand-awarded chef Andy Goodbourn, offers contemporary takes on classic pub dishes, such as Nottinghamshire Pork Belly with wild garlic and chicken cream, and Cromer Crab and Avocado Salad with beef dripping croutons.

Among the additional attractions at The Anchor, there is a  include an 18-seater model train, The Anchor Express, which provides free rides for visitors every hour. The venue also plans to host regular community activities, including quizzes and themed food nights.

Next door, Tom Browns has been relaunched as a high-end dining destination under the direction of Jack Pearce, who was named Best Young Chef in Nottingham. The restaurant’s menu focuses on steak and seafood, with dishes such as 21oz Dry-aged Côte de Boeuf and Sole Meunière in brown butter and caper sauce. Tom Browns will also offer a programme of live entertainment, with a schedule of performances throughout May, including appearances by Urban Intro Band, DJ Jez Prince, and Boyzlife. A bottomless brunch event with singer Mollie Laine is planned for July.

Sean Reddington, founder of Reddington Pub Company, said, “The reopening of The Anchor and Tom Browns isn’t just about opening doors, but bringing a new level of culinary excellence to Gunthorpe and creating unforgettable experiences for both locals and visitors from across the country. Reddington Pub Company is committed to bringing the best in dining to The Midlands, and we’re thrilled to open these two new venues, alongside our already popular and award-winning pubs The Old Vol and The Reindeer.”

Jack Pearce, head chef at Tom Browns, added, “At Tom Browns, we’re not just elevating dining in the Midlands, we’re redefining it. Taking classic techniques and the finest, freshest ingredients, we’re blending them with a touch of creativity, crafting exquisite sharing dishes perfect for any occasion — whether it’s a romantic date night or a catch-up with friends. We look forward to welcoming our first guests this weekend to present what we’ve created — a refined dining experience.”
