Luna Omakase partners with Château Mercian for exclusive Japanese wine and sushi pairing

High-rise restaurant Luna Omakase, located on the ninth floor of 100 Liverpool Street in the City, has announced a month-long collaboration with Château Mercian, Japan’s oldest established winery. Beginning on 9th September and running through the end of the month, the restaurant will pair a seasonal 12-course Japanese menu with a curated selection of four wines from the award-winning producer.

The event aims to showcase Japanese viticulture alongside contemporary Edomae-style sushi. Executive chef Leonard Tanyag, who leads the 12-seat venue, has designed a menu that evolves with the lunar calendar, offering dishes such as King Crab Nigiri, Wagyu A5 Sando and Bluefin Tuna Belly Tartare. The pairings have been hand-selected by Michele Orbolato, head of wine and sake at Thesleff Group, which owns Luna.

Château Mercian was founded in 1870 following the dispatch of two Japanese students to France to study European winemaking methods. The producer operates across Yamanashi, Nagano and Fukushima prefectures, and generates vintages from both traditional and experimental grape varieties, including Koshu, Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Albariño. The vineyard has played a key role in the development of Japan’s wine industry and continues to receive international accolades.

Among the wines featured in the pairing are the Rivalis Left Bank Chardonnay, with tropical fruit and vanilla notes, Iwade Koshu Ortum, a limited release of 1,100 bottles with citrus and jasmine aromas, Koshu Gris de Gris, which offers a distinctive reddish-orange hue and floral complexity, and Mariko Syrah, a bold red with pepper spice and dark fruit character. Each has has been matched to a specific course, with suggestions including Sea Bream with Yuzu Salt alongside the chardonnay, and Seared Wagyu Nigiri paired with the Mariko Syrah.

“Luna is the only restaurant in London to present such an exquisite line-up of Japanese wines,” said Orbolato. “Each bottle reflects the precision and artistry that compliments Chef Tanyag’s omakase – subtlety, elegance and a profound respect for terroir. The result is a pairing experience that is as rare as it is memorable.”
