Invasion season three | Show review

Helmed by co-creators Simon Kinberg and David Wei, Apple TV+’s Invasion chronicles an alien invasion through the eyes of various characters from around the world. The first season was a slow-burn character drama that saw the extraterrestrial invaders’ assault take hold, whereas the second outing centred on humanity’s efforts to fight back. The newest season continues to take this globe-trotting sci-fi thriller in interesting new directions as a fresh threat emerges.

The latest instalment picks up two years after the events of the second series. US soldier Trevante Ward (Shamier Anderson) has succeeded in destroying the Mothership, seemingly dying in the process, and the world has begun to return to normalcy. However, peace doesn’t last for long. Trevante suddenly reappears from one of the aliens’ portals and warns of seeing something on the ship. Elsewhere, Japanese engineer Mitsuki (Shioli Kutsuna) investigates a strange new signal.

The opening episodes establish what has happened in the world since Trevante entered the Mothership. The invaders (known as Hunter-killers) have started to die off mysteriously, research bases have been set up around fallen ships, and people are now living in a post-invasion world where international borders hold less significance. However, the show makes it clear early in the first episode that the danger isn’t over yet. The tension continues to ratchet up from here at a slow and methodical pace, with each new revelation only raising more intriguing questions, with the biggest mysteries revolving around what happened to Trevante on the ship and how he managed to survive.

The show maintains its taut pace by carefully balancing its various plotlines. Each time it switches to a different character, the script tugs at another thread until a new piece of information is revealed. Compelling performances from Anderson, Kutsuna, and the rest of the cast do a great job of pulling viewers into each of their individual plights, with Mitsuki’s search for answers being one of this season’s most fascinating additions.

While the return to the slow-burn approach may come as a disappointment to fans of the more action-heavy second season, the enthralling plot raised in the opening episodes of Invasion’s third season is more than enough of a reason for viewers to keep watching.
