Spitalfields Market celebrating 20 years since regeneration with anniversary event

To mark the 20th anniversary of its iconic regeneration, Spitalfields Market will be holding a public celebration on 4th September. The event will take place from 12.30 till 8.30pm across Bishops Square and the wider Spitalfields Estate, with additional activities planned to continue throughout September.

Spitalfields, located between the City of London and Shoreditch, underwent a major redevelopment in the early 2000s, which aimed to revitalise the historic area, transforming it into a mixed-use space combining retail, food, art and independent traders. The project, completed in 2005, sought to preserve the market’s heritage while adapting to the needs of a modern urban environment. Spitalfields Market has since become a popular destination for both Londoners and tourists, known for its combination of independent boutiques, designer shops, food stalls and regular cultural events.

The anniversary event will feature a range of activities designed to reflect the market’s evolution and its place in the local community. There will be live performances on the Bishops Square Main Stage, with a lineup that brings in regular performers The Rookery (led by singer-songwriter James L Burton), The Latin Formula, Reggae DJ Skowa Kabala, Rock Choir and many more. Free group dance sessions will be open to the public, hosted by The Tea Dance and Tango Fever, and a wide range of offers and free treats will be available from vendors at the market, including The Power of 20 promotions offering 20% discounts on selected store collections and dining.

The market’s socials will be running a series of Spitalfields Spotlights throughout the month, introducing the people behind the destination’s success and featuring interviews with influential members of the East London community.

“We are incredibly proud to celebrate 20 years since the redevelopment of Spitalfields, a milestone that has transformed this historic area into the vibrant and thriving community it is today,” says Jason Dervin, director at Spitalfields Estate. “This anniversary is a testament to the vision, dedication and collaborative spirit that has shaped Spitalfields into a truly unique destination. We look forward to celebrating with everyone and continuing to build on this rich legacy for many years to come.”
