Historic Hampshire pub The Ship reopens after extensive renovation works

The Ship in Bishops Sutton, near Alresford, officially reopened its doors, marking a new chapter for the historic village pub. The relaunch is led by Kelly Shaw, a newcomer to the hospitality industry whose previous career spanned cybersecurity and interior design, and chef Tristan Lee, previously of the Michelin-starred Restaurant Tristan in Horsham.

The 16th-century Hampshire pub, which has served the local community for over 400 years, has undergone a significant restoration aimed at preserving its historical features while introducing a contemporary dining experience. Shaw, who oversaw the pub’s redesign, said: “I wanted The Ship to feel timeless, grounded, and deeply human. It’s not about chasing trends, but about creating a place people instinctively feel comfortable in. Somewhere with soul.”

The renovation has retained original elements such as oak beams and heritage brickwork, while incorporating new design features including bespoke joinery, antique furnishings, and a warm, natural colour palette created in collaboration with Bauwerk Colour. Lighting, furniture, and fittings were sourced from local makers and antique fairs, with the aim of creating a space that balances comfort with character.

The kitchen is led by Chef Tristan Lee, returning to the stove after a two-year sabbatical. The menu focuses on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and includes dishes such as Trout with Roasted Shallots, Bacon, and Watercress, Pork Schnitzel with Samphire and Fennel Remoulade, and Beetroot Tarte with Ricotta and Cherries. The range of desserts entails traditional offerings like Chocolate Mousse and Lemon Meringue Pie.

The drinks menu comprises organic and biodynamic wines curated by Shaw, alongside locally brewed beers and a concise cocktail list. “Better wine, better planet, better drinking. These bottles feel alive,” said Shaw. “At The Ship, we think wine should be more than just a drink. It should tell a story of the land, the vines, and the hands that made it.”

A new weekly event, The Sunday Table, will offer a communal, family-style lunch intended to encourage shared dining and conversation.
