“It’s not just horror – it’s a relationship drama”: Camila Morrone, Adam DiMarco and Haley Z Boston on Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen

The new Netflix horror-thriller series Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is framed around a central conceit – that fear and anxiety many of us can relate to: am I marrying the right person?

It was fascinating to learn from showrunner Haley Z Boston that this idea was, somewhat ironically, born out of exposure to true love. Her parents’ seemingly perfect relationship created a pressure of its own – that fear of not finding the same certainty for herself. It’s a tantalising springboard for a story where those anxieties are made manifest, as a creeping sense of dread begins to take hold of Rachel, played by Camila Morrone.

We had the chance to speak to Boston about crafting this narrative in a series format – something we don’t often see in this space – and how she used a range of cinematic tools to create a visceral sense of claustrophobia and unease, from the design of the house itself to the way Rachel is physically and emotionally contained within it. Boston also spoke about drawing inspiration from classic horror films like Carrie and Rosemary’s Baby, which similarly externalise women’s internal fears, but here pushing that idea further into the realm of contemporary relationship horror.

We also caught up with Morrone and Adam DiMarco, who spoke about building the central relationship at the heart of the show. Morrone reflected on stepping into the genre for the first time, drawn in by the script’s unique blend of horror, relationship drama and even comedy, while DiMarco plays with – and subtly subverts – the idea of the charming, seemingly trustworthy partner.

Across both conversations, we also explored that central question of soulmates – whether it’s something they believe in, and whether the show ultimately encourages audiences to.
