“The show deals in the old and the new and the paranormal”: Ben Stegmair and Molly Zhang on Daemons of the Shadow Realm
Based on the manga created by Hiromu Arakawa – the same mangaka behind classics such as Full Metal Alchemist and Silver Spoon – Daemons of the Shadow Realm is a new series that follows prophesied twins who are separated at birth. What seems to be a tale set in feudal Japan takes viewers on a ride as the show progresses, introducing a clash between the old and the new. The main protagonists, Yuru and Asa, hold the powers of Seal and Break, and their reunion sparks an adventure that sees Yuru traverse the new world he was kept from and get to know his sister in the process. The siblings are played by voice-acting veteran Ben Stegmair, who also acts as Assistant Director on the anime, and Molly Zhang.
The Upcoming caught up with the two actors to discuss the series. Zhang started the conversation by introducing the story, everything the audience should expect from it, and the significance of it being Arakawa’s work. She talked about the complexity of her character, Asa, whose cool, no-nonsense exterior is softened by her deep adoration for her brother; her desperation to connect with him after their separation is evident in her characterisation. Zhang also commented on the never-ending cycle of this animated medium, and how a show like Daemons of the Shadow Realm can raise a new generation of anime-lovers. Stegmair, on the other hand, opened up about Yuru and his perspective on the new world, highlighting how he utilised his experience visiting Japan to capture the awe and curiosity in the character’s voice. He briefly talked about his work as AD on the series and directing Zhang in some episodes. Finally, Stegmair touched on his attachment to Yuru and the legacy unfolding in the show.
