Hotel Café Royal unveils afternoon tea especially for children just in time for summer holidays

Hotel Café Royal, the London establishment on Regent Street between Mayfair and Soho, has introduced a new afternoon tea aimed especially at younger guests. Served in the historic Café Royal Grill and priced at £35 per person, A Little Royal Afternoon Tea has launched just in time for the summer holidays with a menu that introduces the British afternoon tea tradition through royal-themed dishes and familiar flavours.

The hotel has been a city landmark since 1865. With 159 guestrooms and suites and a spa, it’s particularly notable for its places to eat, which include the Café Royal Grill, Cakes & Bubbles by pastry chef Albert Adrià, the Green Bar and Alex Dilling at Hotel Café Royal, the hotel’s two Michelin-starred restaurant. The menu for A Little Royal Afternoon Tea has been created by head pastry chef Maxence Blondelle and offers what the team describes as a playful interpretation of the traditional meal, combining royal references, British flavours and pâtisserie.

In the savoury selection there’s a range of finger sandwiches made with regional produce from across the UK. Among them are Right Royal Ham and Cheese (a reference to Buckingham Palace and a variation on the classic ham and cheese sandwich), The Royal Egg Soldier (prepared with Arlington White egg mayonnaise) and the Covent Garden Cucumber Crown, made with cucumber pearls and cream cheese.

The pâtisserie has also been given the royal treatment. The King’s Ruby Treasure is a popcorn cream choux inspired by the Crown Jewels, while The Royal Battenberg is a version of the traditional cake with layers of blueberry jam and marbled sugar. The Strawberry Kingdom Roll is made with vanilla ganache and strawberry confit, and The Golden Crown Jewel combines hazelnut gianduja and caramel biscuit. Then of course there are the scones – traditional plain ones here, with clotted cream and jams.

Drinks to enjoy with all the treats are equally indulgent, including a Café Royal Hot Chocolate, a Coconut Babyccino and Passion Fruit & Orange Tea. Finally, to top off the experience, the menu concludes with The Royal Sundae – and, in true style, it’s all accompanied by live piano performances.
