Borough’s Flat Iron Square to transform into Bavarian beer hall for month-long Oktoberfest
Flat Iron Square in Borough, south London, will host a month-long Oktoberfest celebration from 26th September to 24th October, with the venue converted into a Bavarian-style beer hall for the duration of the festival.
The programme centres on Saturdays, when the venue will serve steins of Staropramen throughout the day alongside Bratwurst cooked on the grill. A live Oompah band and MCs will lead the entertainment, and organisers have scheduled stein-holding contests and bratwurst eating competitions for guests who wish to take part. Later in the day, Jägermeister will host a DJ line-up.
For the duration of the festival, the site will be decorated with blue and white chequered bunting and flags, and fitted out with long wooden beer tables and bench seating. Guests are invited to wear lederhosen and dirndls.
Saturday tickets are sold through Fever across two sittings, from 12pm to 3.30pm and from 4pm to 7.30pm. Table tickets start at £15 per person and seat groups of six to eight, while general admission tickets cost £22.50 and place guests on mixed tables. All tickets include a two-pint stein and a guaranteed table.
The venue’s regular weekly programming will also adopt a German theme during the festival period. On Tuesdays, the weekly quiz becomes Bier Hall Quizzing, with an Oktoberfest-themed round added. Wednesday’s Margarita night becomes Margtoberfest, “Mexico meets Munich”, with £7 Margaritas, £10 Lageritas and £12 Steineritas on the drinks list. Thursday nights, billed as Seshiöns, will feature “bier-hall bangers all night long”.
Friday brings Steins + Spritz, offering £8 two-pint steins and two-for-one spritzes. On Sundays, the Matchtag Social will show live sport across 19 screens.
Oktoberfest originated in Munich in 1810 and has become a widely exported format, with British venues increasingly staging their own versions during the autumn months. Flat Iron Square – a food and drink complex housed in a series of railway arches, located at 45 Southwark Street, London SE1 9HP, a short walk from Borough Market and London Bridge station – has previously run seasonal programming tied to sporting events and public holidays.
