Award-winning documentary American Doctor sets UK and Ireland cinema release
Conic has shared that American Doctor, the award-winning documentary from first-time feature director Poh Si Teng, will open in UK and Irish cinemas on 20th November following an acclaimed festival run that began with its world premiere in Sundance’s US Documentary Competition.
The film follows three American doctors who travel to Gaza to volunteer in hospitals overwhelmed by the war. Palestinian-American emergency physician Dr Thaer Ahmad, Jewish-American orthopaedic surgeon Dr Mark Perlmutter and trauma surgeon Dr Feroze Sidhwa arrive with different backgrounds and perspectives but are united by a commitment to treating patients amid bombardment, dwindling medical supplies and constant danger.
As the conflict continues, the documentary follows the trio beyond the operating theatre and into the political arena, charting their efforts to bring first-hand testimony from Gaza to lawmakers in Washington while advocating for their Palestinian colleagues and patients.
American Doctor marks the feature directorial debut of journalist and filmmaker Poh Si Teng, whose previous producing credits include the Oscar-nominated St Louis Superman and Emmy-winning Patrice: The Movie. Produced alongside Kirstine Barfod (The Cave) and Reem Haddad, the documentary has received multiple audience awards at festivals including Hot Docs, Full Frame Documentary Festival and Salem Film Fest, as well as the Amnesty International Award at Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival.
