Designer profile: Bora Aksu

London-based, Turkish designer Bora Aksu first burst onto the fashion scene in 2002 when he graduated with an MA from Central Saint Martin’s. Many sang his praises, hailing him the “star of the show”, such as The Independent and The Daily Telegraph. Aksu also attracted the eye of unstoppable designer duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabanna, who purchased pieces of his debut collection to use as inspiration.

Things really took off when the ARG group awarded Aksu sponsorship funds, which enabled him to make his debut at London Fashion Week in February 2003, where he won the “New Generation” award and thus secured his place on the official London Fashion Week schedule for the very next season, every young designers dream. Aksu then went on to win the award another four times.Fas

Throughout his strong career Aksu has preferred to let his designs do the talking, his approach to clothes being very distinct. Intriguing and seducing, his pieces are romantic but with an edgy, darker twist. His collections are always inspired by a story, specifically looking at the details of the lives within it.

Despite channelling a futuristic look last season, Aksu is back to his romantic self, and Spring/Summer 2012 comes in the form of Edwardian ladies dressed in their best. Postcard perfect, the collection consists of a floral frenzy interrupted by pink petticoats with frilled hems, tightened bodices and ornate paneling. There are bows, ribbons and lots of lace; sheer skirts overlaid with shocks of deep raspberry and turquoise plaits and petals. Aside from a captivating story of love the collection defines the evolution of the Bora Aksu brand.
