The 25th Hour at Bedroom Bar

It doesn’t matter if you’re an artist showing your work in a small gallery, a journalist collaborating on a magazine or a starting band in a small venue. Everybody needs opportunities, a moment that allows you to display those special qualities and make yourself visible. On Friday night, the upstairs of Shoreditch’s Bedroom Bar hosted the monthly The 25^th Hour night, where ex-Libertines drummer Gary Powell gave a stage to upcoming bands to show off their talent. 

First up are the Dactyls, a three-piece punk band that on their website proclaims: “If rock’n’roll is dead, this is music fit for its funeral.” Fusing elements of punk garage, psych and acid rock into machine-tight arrangements, Dactyls create a massive, crafted sound with tales of sex and violence that warm up the half-full venue.

Next is London-based quartet Eighteen Nightmares at the Lux, bringing more distorted sounds and garbled vocals not recommended for delicate eardrums, with garage rock, psychobilly and dirty blues tones booming the bar. The venue is only halfway to capacity but it’s obvious that the bands already have small groups of fans ready to claim that they were there since the beginning. The gig ends with a hard-core cover of Nancy Sinatra’s These Boots are Made for Walkin’ frenetically celebrated by the crowd.
