Nick Mulvey at Rough Trade East | Live review

Rough Trade East last night hosted the immensely talented up-and-coming solo artist Nick Mulvey: it was a gig that showcased a gifted artist who has a very bright future ahead of him. Playing solo after leaving his old band the Portico Quartet, it was just him and his classical guitar played through an amp with a hint of delay on it, resonating a pleasant sense of atmosphere and clarity.

Mulvey utilises influences of classical and jazz guitar in his playing and songs, with a taste of folk and soul, little hints of Jack Johnson and Everlast.  His voice is very soft, soothing and mellow – a perfect complement to the music. He’s on tour to promote his acclaimed debut album First Mind, singing hits including as Cucuruc and Vetiver.

The most profound aspect of the show was Mulvey’s guitar playing, as it was near virtuosic levels. Coming from a classical background, he is able to use the guitar like a piano and play bass rhythms and high octave melodies simultaneously while singing!  It was another verification of how talented this guy really is.

While this is just the start for him, Mulvey is an artist who is already in a league of his own.  Most solo artists could only dream of having the talent that he possesses, and he most certainly deserves every bit of credit. We hope he will be around again soon: it is certain he will be more than well known in due time.
