Taking a closer look at Pamela love

Taking a closer look at Pamela love

New York City-based jewellery designer Pamela Love, has been a favourite of mine since I discovered the custom jewellery she produced for the hit HBO TV Series, True Blood.

Love has gained a cult following for her edgy, paganesque pieces that in no way conform to the ideas and concepts of jewellery design in the traditional sense. The artist and designer also experiments with varying materials and has designed her jewellery in a diverse range, from traditional gold and silver, to more exotic and unique sources such as resin, brass, leather, wood and howlite. The fact that Love is also an artist is reflected in the dark extravagance and yet often romantic whimsicality of her designs.

The designer has an enviable résumé of collaborations to her name that reads like a who’s who of the fashion and entertainment industries: Marchesa, Twenty8Twelve, Yigal Azrouel, Frank Tell, and Zac Posen for their runway shows and presentations, an eco-friendly line of sustainable jewellery with Rogan and a collaboration with British retail megalith Topshop, making Love the first American designer to do so. She worked with Opening Ceremony and Spike Jonze to create a line inspired by his film Where The Wild Things Are and has produced custom jewellery for HBO’s hit TV series, True Blood.

Love was named as one of the runners up at 2011’s CFDA’s Vogue Fashion Fund  (Joseph Altuzarra won). Pamela Love and her distinctive and innovative designs for women and men that push creative boundaries and the conceived notions of traditional jewellery design, make her a name to know.

Her creativity is further fuelled by her passion for nature and science, as well as astronomy, astrology, religion, magic and folk jewellery. Her deep connection to the American Southwest also continues to be a driving inspiration behind her artistry and craft. Love defies traditional categories of fine or costume jewellery through the use of materials ranging from brass and leather to 14-carat gold and precious stones. Her collections, like Love herself, blend mystery with romance, reminiscent of stories both whimsical and dark.
