Is crafting set for a comeback in 2015?

According to Yahoo, 2015 will be a time of “embryonic renaissance, where we surround ourselves in a world where materials, objects, fashion, and design make us feel happy and safe”. This reflects how much people enjoy arts and crafts and it’s often because it provides them with a sense of comfort and allows them to express their own individualism. Research has shown that certain forms of crafting also have a positive impact on mind, health and wellbeing, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.

Today, we can use crafting in all sorts of ways, from personalising birthday gifts and creating wedding decorations to upcycling furniture and items around the home. 2015 is proving to be a popular year for our favourite pastime and below are some of the trends that have graced the crafting world so far:

Homemade cards

Fewer people are buying cards from shops for birthdays and occasions; more are opting for the homemade approach. Whatever the reason, giving a relative or friend a handmade card will make it that extra bit special, and the sentimental factor will mean they’re far less likely to throw it away.

Upcycling

Whether it’s clothing, large pieces of furniture or even the smaller details, upcycling is here to stay. This growing trend is transforming our homes (and wardrobes) and breathing new life into our old items, often without having to spend a fortune. There are quite literally no limits to what you can create! Find an old piece at a boot sale or charity shop, get your craft on and transform it into something new, ready to be loved once again. Upcycled items are eco-friendly and put old products to new use so you don’t have to throw them out. DIY wedding details

DIY weddings continue to be huge this year, with more brides choosing to make their own stationery, decorations and favours. From table centrepieces and flowers to cakes and confetti, couples are choosing to use craft materials to save money and coincidentally make their special day completely unique to them. After arriving on the scene last year, the humble Mason jar continues to play a huge part in weddings, being used for candles, flowers and centrepieces, adding vintage/retro flair to the day. 

Knitting

That’s right, it’s not just for grannies! Knitting has fast become a growing trend over the past few years, being an enjoyable craft for everyone, young or old. With more online how-to guides and videos on YouTube, picking up the knitting and crochet needles has never been easier. From clothing and accessories to home décor and children’s toys, 2015 is your year to finally learn and get creative with patterns.
