Sea Girls at Brixton Academy

This week English indie rock band Sea Girls graced Brixton Academy with a sold-out gig as part of a twice-postponed tour in celebration of Homesick, their newest album (out on 14^th January 2022). The four-piece are back on the road in style, having played the main stages at Reading and Leeds Festival and Latitude in August, prior to a countrywide outing at venues in Leicester, Newcastle, Glasgow, Birmingham, Cambridge, Sheffield and now London, with Liverpool, Oxford, Leeds and Manchester to follow.

Homesick sees Sea Girls (Henry Camamile, Rory Young, Andrew Dawson and Oli Khan) deliver 13 songs of guitar-driven pop, including two bonus tracks. It’s an uplifting album, packed to the brim with hooks and candid lyrics, that was co-produced by long-term producer Larry Hibbitt and Grammy award-winning additions Jacknife Lee, Jonny Coffer and Cass Lowe. New single Sick was released as a first taste in August, premiered by Arlo Parks as Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1. Camamile described the work as “me listing things I’m pissed off with and feeling sorry for myself; it’s a growing up song where I realise I’m no longer a young child. It’s me in my bedroom at home ranting with my thoughts and going down the hole of being pissed […] I am sick of everything – from things I used to love through to things that feel vacuous, like consuming and buying. All these emotions are piling up and it’s me just asking for a reset, a childish solution.”

Friday’s set at Brixton Academy was a typically sweat-drenched occasion, with the band delivering sing-along anthems to an ecstatic crowd of loyal fans. The performance is a long-awaited treat after months of pandemic-driven silence, and Sea Girls do not disappoint.
