“I definitely love a hard pivot”: Monica Barbaro and Diego Boneta on At Midnight

At Midnight is the new rom-com from director Jonah Feingold that tells the story of aspiring actress Sophie (Monica Barbaro), who is cheated on by her co-star and boyfriend whilst on set filming the third instalment of their superhero franchise Super Society. Bewildered and heartbroken, she escapes on a retreat to a resort hotel in beautiful Mexico, where she meets hotel manager Alejandro (Diego Boneta). An interest begins to develop when they decide to meet up after his shift has finished – at midnight.

Filled with plenty of romance and humour and set against a tropical backdrop, this feature is a heartwarming antidote to the frosty temperatures of the time of year, and just in time for Valentine’s Day. It brings together all the better tropes of the popular genre with firm nods to films like Notting Hill and Paris at Midnight.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to Diego Boneta about his role in the film, what it was like working with Barbaro and such a brilliant ensemble cast. He also discussed the influences behind this rom-com and what makes it stand out from its contemporaries.

We also spoke to Barbaro about choosing her roles from playing Phoenix in Top Gun: Maverick with Tom Cruise to her leading role as Sophie in this movie and the different personas and themes within her acting journey. She also discussed preparing for her part, working on a fun set in beautiful Mexico and the joy of bringing her dance training skills to screen for this movie.
