Anatomy of a Fall: On the red carpet with Justine Triet and Sandra Hüller

Anatomy of A Fall is an award-winning French courtroom drama from a screenplay by Justine Triet and Arthur Harari that stars Sandra Hüller (Sandra) as a successful writer desperately trying to prove her innocence after she is accused of murdering her husband Samuel (Samuel Theis) when he falls to his death from the attic window, discovered bleeding on the snowy ground outside by his son Daniel and their family dog Snoop.

Triet uses her narrative to slowly unpick the threads of this small family, which play out in gripping courtroom scenes after Sandra’s indictment. The many layers to their relationship are brought to the surface as viewers hear about the tension between the couple after their son suffered a traumatic childhood accident, resentment from Samuel towards the ambiguity of Sandra’s sexuality within their marriage and a subtle power battle between the couple as they both pursued their individual creative careers. 

Following its world premiere at the 76^th Cannes Film Festival where the film won the prestigious Palme D’Or, The Upcoming were invited to attend the UK premiere of the feature where we had the pleasure of speaking to the screenwriter and director Triet and the actor Hüller on the red carpet as they talked about their award-winning movie.

Hüller spoke to us about approaching this role, working once again with Triet on her project and how the story undulates with shifting emotions from both her and the people that surround her as she goes through her court case.

We spoke to Triet about piecing this film together and bringing Hüller on board in an English-speaking role. She also talked to us about the misogyny that Sandra faced in court and how she wanted her voice as a woman to be heard.
