“I was just so moved and fascinated by everything they said”: Julie Cohen and Sean Saifa Wall on Every Body

“I was just so moved and fascinated by everything they said”: Julie Cohen and Sean Saifa Wall on Every Body

Every Body is the new documentary from Julie Cohen, which delves into the much-misunderstood world of intersex individuals through the lens of three subjects: River Gallo, Alicia Roth Weigel and Sean Saifa Wall. In charting the personal journeys they’ve faced from childhoods shrouded in stigma and invasive medical procedures to become empowered advocates for the intersex community, their stories provide a window into the need for education and challenging traditional medical and societal approaches, as well as an inspiring tale of resilience and empowerment through activism.

The Upcoming had the opportunity to speak with Julia Cohen and Sean Saifa Wall about their documentary, the vital importance of bringing attention to the intersex experience, challenging traditional gender binaries and showcasing the  activism within the intersex community.

Cohen shared how she was drawn to the project through an archival story and inspired by the activists’ resilience and beauty, while Wall emphasised the importance of the collaborative approach to making the film. We spoke about how Every Body aims to educate and balances personal stories with hope for future generations.
