The new biographical drama Lee, featuring Oscar-winner Kate Winslet as the pioneering American war correspondent and photographer Elizabeth “Lee” Miller, is scheduled to premiere in UK and Irish cinemas on 13th September, with a subsequent release on Sky Cinema slated for 2024. The film examines Miller’s formidable journey as she documented the atrocities of the Nazi regime during World War II, a task that brought significant personal challenges despite her groundbreaking role in a male-dominated field.

The film, directed by Ellen Kuras, showcases a star-studded cast including Andy Samberg as Life Magazine photographer David E Scherman, Alexander Skarsgård as English Surrealist artist Roland Penrose and Marion Cotillard as Solange D’Ayen, the fashion director of French Vogue and a close friend of Miller. Other notable cast members include Josh O’Connor, Andrea Riseborough and several others in key roles.

The narrative of Lee highlights Miller’s audacious efforts to capture some of the war’s most crucial moments, which came at a great personal cost. Her work not only documented historical evidence but also infused art with journalism, presenting a provocative and often horrifying record of the events.

Miller, originally a fashion model and later a photojournalist, is renowned for her work as a correspondent for Vogue during the war. Her career transitioned from fashion to photography, studying under surrealist photographer Man Ray in Paris. Miller’s work during the war included covering significant events such as the liberation of Paris and the horrors of the concentration camps at Buchenwald and Dachau.

The film is produced by Kate Solomon and Winslet, among others, with a team of executive producers including Julia Stuart and Laura Grange. The official trailer offers a glimpse into the harrowing yet visually compelling story of Miller as portrayed by Winslet, alongside her encounters with other key figures of the era represented by the ensemble cast.

Lee is not only a portrayal of a significant historical figure but also an exploration of the personal sacrifices involved in capturing and conveying the truth through art and journalism during one of history’s darkest times, offering an intense depiction of war, horror and violence.
