Mirazur becomes first Three Michelin-starred restaurant to earn B Corp certification

Mirazur, the multi-awarded restaurant located in Menton, has become the first of its kind worldwide to be awarded the B Corp certification, a label denoting high standards of social and environmental performance. Announced on September 6, 2024, this accolade follows a rigorous assessment process and highlights the establishment’s commitment to sustainability and ethical business practices.

Owned by chef Mauro Colagreco, Mirazur has previously gained recognition for its sustainable initiatives, including becoming the first restaurant to achieve a Zero-Plastic certification in 2020 and receiving a Michelin Green Star the same year. Colagreco, also a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Biodiversity since 2022, has been a proactive figure in promoting what he terms “circular gastronomy,” a culinary movement he has been championing since 2006 (when Mirazur opened) aiming to minimize environmental impact within the industry.

The B Corp certification, overseen by the non-profit B Lab, requires businesses to meet stringent criteria in areas such as governance, community engagement, environmental impact, and customer relations. Companies must undergo a detailed impact assessment, a review by a B Lab analyst, and a legal commitment to prioritizing public benefit.

The B Corp movement is part of a continuous improvement process, with a reassessment every three years, according to constantly evolving criteria that guarantee ever-higher standards. Supported by the NGO B Lab, it also brings together a worldwide network of regional associations, such as B Lab Europe or Sistema B in South America, as well as local branches like B Lab France, to strengthen and develop the community at various levels.

Colagreco says “We are committed to supporting local economies, promoting an educational culture that emphasizes the importance of respecting and protecting our environment. We are dedicated to improving the health and well-being of our community, adopting sustainable practices and taking seriously our responsibility to protect.”

Mirazur’s achievement marks a significant milestone in the restaurant industry, reflecting a growing trend towards more responsible and sustainable business practices in gastronomy.
