Temaki set to bring signature handrolls and Japanese-Californian cuisine to Mayfair

Temaki, a Japanese restaurant led by A M Dupee, will open its doors on Maddox Street in Mayfair this March to offer a menu that combines classic Japanese dishes with influences from Californian cuisine. The move marks a return to the London dining scene for Dupee, who first launched the earlier iteration of Temaki in Brixton in 2021. The opening aims to bring a broader selection of Japanese small plates and the restaurant’s signature handrolls to a central London audience.

Temaki first gained attention as London’s inaugural handroll bar, inspired by similar venues in California. The original Brixton site quickly built a dedicated following, noted for its focus on quality and its unique take on Japanese cuisine. The new Mayfair location, part of The Crown Estate’s portfolio, expands on the original concept, offering not only handrolls but also a wider range of dishes such as crispy rice with fish, A4 wagyu sliders, various sandos and toro. The drinks will include a curated wine list, Japanese saké and a concise cocktail selection.

Dupee commented on the new opening: “We loved our time in Brixton, and with our new creative team we are so excited to build on that success in central London, on Maddox Street. We’ve been working on some fun new dishes and will of course serve our signature handrolls – I can’t wait to open the doors!”

The restaurant will be split over two levels. The upper floor features a 16-seat counter dining area, allowing guests to observe the chefs at work, reflecting traditional Japanese dining customs. The lower level, seating 28, draws inspiration from Japanese listening bars and will be available for private events.

Sarah McLaren, hospitality and leisure leasing director at The Crown Estate, said, “We are pleased to welcome Temaki to the West End. It is a great example of a rapidly growing independent operator, which is ready to establish itself in the heart of London. We are dedicated to supporting the hospitality industry by continuing to curate a portfolio of new, growing and established brands to cater to a diverse audience.”

Temaki in Mayfair is scheduled to open daily, serving lunch from 12pm to 3pm and dinner from 5pm to 10pm.
