Danny Boyle and Alex Garland reunite for 28 Years Later, expanding the iconic rage virus saga

Nearly three decades after the unsettling tale of the rage virus in 28 Days Later, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland have teamed up again to deliver 28 Years Later, a new chapter in this dystopian saga. The film, slated for an exclusive cinema release on 20^th June 2025, explores the continued horrors and societal shifts resulting from the pandemic’s fallout.

Boyle, known for his Academy Award-winning work, returns to direct this sequel, which promises to push the narrative boundaries set by its predecessor. Written by Garland, who had garnered an Academy Award nomination for the original, the sequel unpacks the dire conditions of a group of survivors forced to live in a brutally enforced quarantine zone.

The plot of 28 Years Later centres on these survivors residing on a small island, the only portion of land seemingly safe from the widespread infestation. The fragile peace of their existence is disrupted when one of them undertakes a perilous mission across the mainland. This mission not only reveals the mutated stages of the infected but also unveils the depths of human resilience and the darker aspects of survival.

This gripping narrative is brought to life by a cast featuring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams and Ralph Fiennes, under the production prowess of Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, Bernard Bellew, as well as Boyle and Garland themselves. Cillian Murphy joins the team as the executive producer, adding his distinctive flair to the production.

As 28 Years Later prepares to arrive in cinemas, both fans of the original film and new audiences await to see how Boyle’s latest work expands upon the dark and thrilling universe he so vividly depicted nearly 30 years ago.
