Barbarella brings 1970s Roman glamour to Canary Wharf

Barbarella brings 1970s Roman glamour to Canary Wharf

Italian restaurant Barbarella opens its doors today in Canary Wharf’s YY Building. The launch marks Big Mamma Group’s latest expansion in London, bringing its distinctive style and cuisine to one of the city’s major financial districts. The restaurant is led by Rome-born head chef Marco Rastelli and features a menu tailored specifically for its new location.

In its iconic waterside setting, the restaurant spans two floors and has been designed by the group’s in-house Studio Kiki. The interiors draw inspiration from 1970s Roman cinema, incorporating vintage Ferragamo silks, mirrored ceilings and chrome-accented lounge areas. An open kitchen is a central feature, and a terrace overlooking the water offers additional seating.

The menu at Barbarella includes a range of Italian dishes, with a focus on bold flavours and presentation. Among the offerings are Ruota di Carretto pizzas (described as ultra-thin and extra-wide), Caramelised Italian Tomato Tatin Served with Parmigiano Cream and homemade pasta – including a one-metre-long spaghettone. Main courses include Cornish Lemon Sole, filleted at the table, and steaks from Phillip Warren, including a 1.2kg T-bone. For dessert, the restaurant offers a gelati section where guests can select from white chocolate, pistachio or chocolate, each served with a choice of sauce.

Barbarella also introduces what the group describes as its most extensive cocktail and wine lists to date. The drinks menu includes new creations such as a Pistachio Espresso Martini, as well as a selection of Italian magnums and vintage wines.

The opening is part of a broader trend of new hospitality venues in Canary Wharf, as the area continues to develop its dining and leisure offerings beyond its traditional business focus. A spokesperson for Big Mamma Group stated that Barbarella aims to bring their “signature glamour” to Canary Wharf, and that the restaurant’s design and menu are intended to reflect the vibrancy of 1970s Rome.
