Pepe Solla opens La Taberna in Poio next door to Michelin-starred Casa Solla

Renowned Spanish chef Pepe Solla has launched a new culinary venue, La Taberna, in Poio, Galicia, adjacent to his Michelin-starred Casa Solla restaurant. The establishment, which opened earlier this year, offers a distinct identity from its fine-dining counterpart, focusing on a more relaxed experience where wine plays a central role. The concept aims to blend traditional Galician cooking with a convivial atmosphere, underpinned by music and an emphasis on local culture.

La Taberna draws inspiration from the lareira, the traditional hearth found in Galician homes that was historically used for both cooking and social gathering. Its menu centres around what Solla describes as “honest, tasty cuisine,” with dishes designed to complement a curated wine selection. The venue’s interior and overall ethos are intended to evoke the spirit of a classic tavern, creating a space that encourages informal dining and conversation.

The team explains that at La Taberna, “wine is the liquid link between gastronomy and music”, signalling their desire to create a multisensory dining experience. The opening marks a new chapter for Solla, who is widely regarded as one of Galicia’s most influential chefs. Known for his innovative approach to regional cuisine at Casa Solla, which has held a Michelin star since 1980, the chef’s latest project pivots towards accessibility and tradition. While Casa Solla continues to offer a refined tasting menu experience, La Taberna seeks to attract a broader audience with simpler fare and wine.

La Taberna is now open to the public, offering both locals and visitors a new way to experience Galician cuisine through the lens of one of its most celebrated chefs.
